A lot of fans are calling for Wenger to go. On an evening like this it’s hardly surprising. But regardless of how long you think Arsene Wenger should be Arsenal manager, there is work to be done in the next seventy-two hours and it won’t be done if we don’t have a manager.
No-one new stepping into the job in the next seventy-two hours would stand a chance of doing better in the remaining time. That’s the truth. Don’t kid yourself otherwise.
We need a central defender. I guess were closest to Cahill and Bolton need the money. Let’s do it. We need a creative midfielder. And we’re not talking about the likes of Mikel Arteta either. And that’s the minimum, we could do with cover elsewhere too.
Seventy-two hours. That’s all.
In those seventy-two hours, Arsenal will either sign the players that make enough people believe there is something that can be made out of this season or they will not. A positive outcome is more likely in these seventy-two hours with a manager than without.
If the transfers in are convincing, then enough fans, pundits and the media will look at them and the players to come back from injury and say that this could work.
If the transfers are not convincing, then there will be an unstoppable momentum that will lead to a change of era. The international break will be touted as the ideal opportunity for change.
I think that the above is true and has a logic separate to what you think of Arsene Wenger and regardless of which outcome is fair or thought to be fair. Situations like this can acquire a momentum that is independent of analysis.
It’s about restoring enough confidence in the next seventy-two hours. Or not.
