In truth West Ham didn’t put up much of a fight. Yes they had a few chances, but Arsenal controlled the game.
West Ham rely on Green, Upson, Parker and Piquionne to be any kind of threat at all. With the latter two missing they were a team that just had to try and stem Arsenal’s flow of attacks.
But the game still had to be won and I’m glad that, suspended Sagna excepted, Wenger put out our strongest team. There were a few negative points. Eboue was caught out a few times, although he worked well with Walcott when going forwards. Szczesny got well out of position once and needs to work on his kicking but was otherwise ok. Particularly when Djourou made a rather lazy back-pass to set up the Hammers only real chance.
But apart from that, this was a classy professional display. Song, Wilshere and Fabregas dominated the midfield completely. They closed West Ham down tight every time the Hammers got the ball, which wasn’t that often. They got beautiful passing sequences going.
Upfront, Walcott and Van Persie were terrific. The quality of their first touches was brilliant. Both goals from open play were fantastic single touch strikes from both.
Both of them obviously needed a run of games to get back to their best and this game will have done both of them a lot of good. Walcott has matured so much now, there is a lot more to his game now and Wayne Bridge, a good opponent but without many games played this season, was way out-classed.
Let’s hope Robin Van Persie can go a long run without injury. He is a class above Chamakh and Bendtner. So far he leads our Man of the Match poll. It’s great to see him back on form.
Go Gunners!
