Arsenal 2:1 Sunderland – just good enough!

This wasn’t a brilliant performance.  Even for the twenty minutes when we were in total control we couldn’t deliver the knockout blow, but it was sufficient for a day that we started fifteenth in the league.  We ended the day tenth, which is a good day at the office in anyone’s book.

The start we got was exciting enough.  A loose clearance collected by Rosicky and fed to Gervinho, a little run and the ball squared to Robin Van Persie who fires it in.  Twenty nine seconds and one nil to the Arsenal.  For the next fifteen, twenty minutes Sunderland were like someone who’s slept through their alarm, charging about getting everywhere to late.

Sad fact is, Arsenal couldn’t capitalise on the space they gave us and get a second.  We were dominating the game but couldn’t score.  Van Persie was on fire again with two great chances.  One was a great turn and chip over the keeper and if there was an Arsenal fan over ten-years-old who didn’t utter the word ‘Bergkamp’ then they weren’t paying attention.  But the ball bounced back off the post along the line and the sliding Walcott couldn’t make contact to direct the rebound in.

But we weren’t dominating because we were playing that well.  Sunderland slowly woke up and started to close the midfield gaps.  They got it together and started to play.  No-one is scared of Arsenal and the pressure started to build.  Their goal came from a freekick, carelessly conceded by Arteta handling. Sebastian Larsson’s kick was unstoppable.  Perfect.  He got the ball up over the mountainous Mertesacker and down again under the bar in the corner.

A few Arsenal fans moaned that he could have started further to his right, but that’s what the wall’s there for and when the freekick is placed that well the keepers got no chance.  Ask Sunderland keeper Mignolet who suffered the same fate when Van Persie got Arsenal’s winner.

But before that winner came we had to endure a dismal spell where we kept losing possession.  Those passing triangles that people used to rave about were gone and Arsenal players weren’t moving for each other.  So the passes were made to players under pressure and ball was often lost.

Szczesny had one nightmare moment and one dream save.  With Jenkinson caught out of position he came along way out of his box to try and beat Sessignon.  The Benin international showed exactly why it was a bad choice, beating him easily and sending in a cross.  Fortunately, Sunderland hadn’t got too many players into the box and Song was able to tidy up.

Another cross in from Sunderland’s left found a big gap in the middle of the box and gave Lee Cattermole the chance to put Sunderland ahead.  But Szczesny spread himself across the goal and kept out.  Fantastic save that probably made the game for Arsenal.  Our confidence is such a brittle thing at the moment, that if we had gone behind I think we would have stayed there.  And everyone’s mood today in those circumstances doesn’t bear thinking about.

Apparently it would have been Lee Cattermole’s first goal for Sunderland.  If had been a proper striker there it would probably have gone in.  But it didn’t and we breathed again.  Arsene Wenger took off Gibbs, who seemed to be struggling, and Arshavin replaced Gervinho who had gone off the pace after the first half hour.

These substitutions were very effective, with a renewed threat down the left that re-energised the rest of the team.  Arshavin made a fantastic run into the box, making fools of three Sunderland defenders, but couldn’t quite find the target.

Sunderland responded with some tough and late tackling and body checking that yielded a series of cards and freekicks.  Arsenal were applying the pressure and then releasing it with some hopeless strikes from Arteta, Van Persie, Santos and then Walcott.

It was looking more and more like a draw.  But then another freekick, ideally positioned for a left-footed master in the form of his life.  Robin Van Persie’s strike was even better than Larsson’s.  The keeper was just as helpless.

Could we hold on, just about, despite the fourth official bizarrely finding an extra five minutes.  It was a nervous five time, especially as we were still giving the ball away, but we made it.  Job done.

Mentions needed Rosicky, Mertersacker and Koscielny who all played well.  Rosicky in particular was full of energy and drive for most of the game.  Arteta was quiet, Song was mixed – good tackles, not so good passing.  Walcott wasn’t exciting but didn’t get played in much either.

Arsenal were good enough thanks to Captain Fantastic, who leads our man of the match poll, and for the first time this season we took more points from a game than last season.

Come on you reds!

‘One game at a time’ says Arsene

Too true. When your limping around the bottom third of the league you need a tight focus on the next three available points. Plus talking about winning things when you’re fifteenth just invites people to take the piss.

Looking at the next game you’ve got to be optimistic. Steve Bruce says that Sunderland are coming to attack, but without Bendtner and Gyan they are much less of a theat. But Sessegnon showed last time that he needs watching. Sebastian Larsson will also fancy his chances of showing Arsene Wenger that he made a mistake letting him go.

What Steve Bruce probably meant was that they are coming to string five feisty lads across the middle and hope to catch us on the break. So Arsenal are going to have to play against nine Sunderland players behind the ball for a lot of the game.

Hopefully we can move the ball faster than we have been so far and get more passes on target. If we can get the passes through to Van Persie and get Gervinho attacking the box we will be okay.

Most of the talk has been about whether Jenkinson will play, mainly because of the long list of alternatives reeled off by Arsene Wenger. I think he will play and that the manager was just trying to fend off another Arsenal crisis story.

This week of course we’ve not been the media’s favorite target thanks to Wayne Rooney and Wenger was canny enough to give the hacks a Rooney quote to help keep the focus there.

Anyway, the real debate amongst fans seems to be Arshavin v Walcott to play up front with RVP and Gervinho. My vote is for Theo, with Arshavin starting against Marseille, but it could be the other way round!

Arsenal will need to be hot from the start

The August schedule for Arsenal is beginning to sink in, five big games in three weeks. We don’t know yet of course who our Champion’s League Qualifier opponents will be, but whoever the opposition it’s a high stakes tie.

The media build-up to the first game (Newcastle) will all be about the four goal lead thrown away last time. Then Champions League, Liverpool, Champions League, Manchester United. The team is going to gave to work straight out of the box, which adds to the tension of the summer transfer window.

Not too much new on that front at the moment. Most pundits seem to believe that the Gervinho deal is all but done. But nothing firm yet on the defensive front.

Some papers would have us believe that Sebastian Larsson ‘snubbed’ Arsenal for the chance to go to Sunderland. Yeah right! Hope Steve Bruce didn’t get fooled into paying too much.

Contrast the Larsson tactics with Clichy, who if he is on his way is doing it without a string of media puff pieces along the way. Another strangely quiet issue is the departure of Eboue. I mean we’ve all heard that Denilson can’t be swapped anyone with two feet, but most were agreed that Eboue was on his way too.

I he’s had moments to make us laugh and cry but he’s still a capable player that would do a lot of Premier League clubs some good. Perhaps he isn’t off after all!!!

Fabregas & Nasri turn down the heat

The latest words from Fabregas and Nasri sources dampen down speculation of a move for either.  Fabregas say he is a happy Arsenal player and Nasri is apparently only talking to Arsenal.

Of course that doesn’t mean that both are definitely staying, but it does mean that neither is trying to ramp up the pressure.  Well who knows, but certainly the Fabregas to Barcelona story doesn’t seem quite as hysterical as last year.  For today I shall be optimistic!

Elsewhere there’s still plenty of bubble and froth.  The Mirror claim exclusively that Arsenal are swooping in on Jermaine Defoe.  I can’t see this myself.  How and why would that work?

According to The Sun, Sebastian Larsson is set to return.  Although I was surprised that he didn’t get more of a chance before he left Arsenal, this doesn’t sound that credible.  Sounds like more froth as agents for players in relegated clubs work to keep their clients visible!  Oh the joy of June, with the action on the pitch over but the transfer action not really in high gear.

By contrast with all the above, things seem to have gone a bit quiet on the central defender front.  What there is out there is mainly us Arsenal fans hopefully echoing earlier stories about Samba or Cahill.  No-one seems that taken with the idea that Roger Johnson and/or Scott Dann are the answer to our prayers at the back.  Of the two, I would favour Cahill, but could we get him if Manchester City open their mega-wallet?

Christopher Samba would certainly be a help on high balls and set-pieces.  He would be hard to bully as well, but I don’t think he has much pace.  I’m not saying that he’s Senderos or Cygan in disguise, but some nippy forwards are just going to wave him goodbye.  It would have to be mix’n'match with Koscielny I suppose, depending what the biggest threat was in a game.  But we definitely have to do something to cut the number of goals we concede.  Hope we get some real news on this front soon.

Anyway, that’s enough staring into the murky water for now.  Better go and earn some money.
